Karnataka Judicial Services Exam | Pattern And Syllabus

The KJS exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination, Mains Written Examination and Viva Voce.

Preliminary Examination

Preliminary Examination is an objective test consisting of multiple-choice questions. The total marks for this stage are 100, with a duration of 2 hours. The exam is divided into three sections:

  • Part A: Focuses on civil laws, including the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), Indian Contract Act, Specific Relief Act and the Constitution.
  • Part B: Covers criminal laws, including the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Indian Evidence Act.
  • Part C: Includes General Knowledge, Reasoning and Mental Ability.

Qualifying Marks: Candidates in the General Category must score a minimum of 60 marks, while SC/ST candidates require 50 marks to qualify.

Mains written Examination

The mains exam is descriptive and consists of four papers:

  • Translation Paper (100 Marks)
  • Law Paper I (100 Marks)
  • Law Paper II (100 Marks)
  • Law Paper III (100 Marks)

Qualifying Marks:

  • General Category: 50 marks per paper.
  • SC/ST: 40 marks per paper.

Viva Voce

The Viva Voce is the final assessment stage, carrying 25 marks. It evaluates the candidate’s general knowledge, understanding of legal principles and suitability for the judicial position.

To qualify, General Category candidates need 12.5 marks, while SC/ST candidates require 10 marks.

Computer Test

A Computer Test is also conducted for 25 marks to access basic computer skills. However, these marks are not included in the final merit list.

Preliminary Examination

1. Part A:

  • Constitution of India
  • Code of Civil Procedure (CPC)
  • Indian Contract Act
  • Specific Relief Act
  • Transfer of Property Act
  • Karnataka Rent Act

2. Part B:

  • Indian Penal Code (IPC)
  • Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)
  • Indian Evidence Act

3. Part C:

  • General Knowledge
  • Reasoning and Mental Ability

Mains Examination

Translation Paper (Marks -100)

There will be one translation paper and the candidates will be required to translate passages in English into Kannada and Kannada into English. The Passages will be from (1) Depositions,(2) Judgements and (3) Documents.

Law Paper – I (Marks – 100)

  • The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
  • The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
  • The Indian Evidence Act, 1872;
  • Principles of Pleading and the Constitution of India

Law Paper – II (Marks – 100)

  • Framing of Issues and writing of Judgments in Civil Cases

Law Paper – III (Marks – 100)

  • Framing of Charges and writing of Judgments in Criminal cases

Viva – Voce (Marks – 100)

The candidates General Knowledge, grasp of principles of law and suitability for appointment as Civil Judge shall be tested.

Computer Test (Marks – 25)

The test of knowledge of computers shall carry maximum 25 marks and such marks secured by the candidate shall be considered for ascertaining the suitability and computer knowledge of the candidates and shall not be aggregated to the total marks obtained in the main written examination and Viva-Voce.
