Tamilnadu Judicial Services Exam | Pattern And Syllabus
The TNPSC Civil Judge exam pattern followed for each exam is explained through the points below. one should prepare for the exam according to the exam pattern to score the maximum marks.
Prelims Exam Pattern
- All questions will be multiple choice based.
- Each question carries one mark.
- For a wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted.
- The question paper will be set in Tamil and English language
- The Prelims exam is just a shortlisting round required to qualify for the main exam. The marks obtained in the TNPSC Civil Judge Prelims Exams won’t be considered for the merit list.
Main Exam Pattern
- All questions require a descriptive type of questions.
- The exam is divided into four papers.
- One needs to qualify for each paper to be considered to pass in the exam.
- One will get 3 hours to attempt each paper.
- Except the Translation paper all other papers shall be answered by the candidates either in English or Tamil.
Viva – Voce Exam Pattern
- The viva-voce carries 60 marks.
- The qualifying marks are 18.
- The marks secured by a candidate in the Viva Voce Test shall be added to the total marks secured by him/her in the Main examination.

- The Specific Relief Act, 1963

- The Tamil Nadu Buildings(Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960 and Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017 (Tamil Nadu Act 42 of 2017)
Part B
- The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
- The Indian Penal Code, 1860
- The Indian Evidence Act, 1872
- The Criminal Law (Amendment) Acts
- The Criminal Minor Acts (including Information Technology Act, 2000; The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012).
Part C
- General Knowledge (Degree standard)
- Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C standard)
Mains Examination
Translation Paper (100 Marks)
- Translation of passages from English to Tamil and from Tamil to English.
Law Paper I (100 Marks)
- The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908;
- The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973;
- The Indian Evidence Act, 1872;
- Principles of pleading
- Constitution of India (as Amended).
Law Paper II (100 Marks)
- Framing of Issues
- Writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.
Law Paper III (100 Marks)
- Framing of charges
- Writing of Judgments in Criminal Cases.
